Development of High Energy Laser (HEL) systems. Led investigation and redesign of seed laser conditioning unit for input to high power fiber amplifiers. Achieved three-fold increase in seed laser linewidth, surpassing requirements for kW-grade fiber amplifiers. Led development of coherent laser beam combining for kW-grade systems.

Responsible for management of the diagnostic systems at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility. Includes budgeting of DIII-D personnel and technical resources in support of the 80+ separate diagnostic systems operated by national laboratories, universities, and industry. Standardized system requirements data, improved the system design review process, and instituted new communication tools, thereby reducing design review time by 50%. Direct supervision of eight technicians and engineers, and oversight of the ~100 person DIII-D Diagnostics team.

Research in magnetic confinement fusion concentrating on energetic ion transport in tokamaks. Led development of time variable neutral beam current and voltage for improved control of tokamak plasmas [NF 2017]. Responsible for operation of fast ion loss detector (FILD) diagnostic [RSI 2014] at the DIII-D tokamak. Additional work in diagnostic development including the gamma ray imager (GRI) [RSI 2016] and implementation of full-band ion cyclotron emission (ICE) measurements. Physics coordinator for spatial calibrations conducted with a coordinate measuring arm at DIII-D.

Postdoctoral research at the Alcator C-Mod National Tokamak Facility conducted as a fellow of the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). This research focused on the design and construction of a Fast Ion Loss Detector (FILD) for the study of Alfvén eigenmodes and ion-cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) on Alcator C-Mod [Pace, RSI 2012]. Collaboration with the DIII-D tokamak included the addition of a second FILD, experiments concerning the turbulent transport of energetic ions, and other energetic ion topics.

Fusion energy research studying energetic particle phenomena in tokamak plasmas. Primary topics include energetic ion transport due to microturbulence and MHD modes [Pace, NF 2011, PPCF 2011]. Collaborated in the design and implementation of a new FILD on the DIII-D tokamak [Pace, RSI 2010]. Additional diagnostic experience obtained with the Fast Ion Dα (FIDA) charge exchange system. Modeling efforts include collaboration on gyrokinetic simulations of fast ion transport with the GYRO, GTC, and TGYRO/TGLF codes and teams. This research resulted in two IAEA invited talks (2009, 2010).

Ph.D. thesis research in basic plasma physics within the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Study includes electron heat transport, temperature gradient driven flow, and characterization of plasma turbulence. These efforts led to the identification of a spontaneously driven thermal wave [Pace, PRL(035003) 2008] and of the correlation between enhanced transport levels and solitary structures in a magnetized plasma filament [Pace, PRL(085001) 2008, POP 2008]. This research resulted in an invited APS talk (2008).
Lab Design and Construction, Winter 2006
Continued development of undergraduate plasma laboratory at UCLA (PHYS 180E). Contributions included design and construction of plasma sources, Langmuir probe analysis, instructional write-ups for laboratory techniques, notebook keeping, and writing new laboratory exercises for students. The plasma source was featured in “Backscatter” [Pace, Physics Today 2007].

Research in tokamak plasma physics at the Electric Tokamak laboratory. Topics of study include particle pinches, turbulence, and tokamak stability. Projects include diagnostic design and construction of Langmuir probes, magnetic probes, and Thomson scattering system.
