Very nice commentary, Dave. I think the word “flagship” was tossed around (Get it? A football pun!) with respect to NSTX-U because, by the definition you quote, it is the flagship experiment at PPPL. Furthermore, PPPL is considered by some (including DOE?) to be the flagship magnetic fusion lab in the US, so that would make NSTX-U the (flagship)^2? Still, I agree with your sentiment that the word flagship is inappropriate to describe NSTX-U in the context of the US fusion program in general.
